German Binoculars

German made binoculars are some of the best binoculars made on the market. Although, there are other makers in other countries, Germany has consistently produced reliable and efficient binoculars through the years. Aside from this praise, what would a normal person just starting out need to know when purchasing a pair of binoculars.

Hunting Binoculars

, along with the gun hunting binoculars are a must have for any hunter.  Unlike normal binocular, hunt binoculars are unique in the fact that they will be used in rugged outdoors conditions.  These conditions could be during rain, snow or sand storms.  As a result, it is vital to look for a pair which are built to last and stand up in the toughest conditions. Rubber armor and o-ring sealed, nitrogen-purged housing give you complete fog-proof and waterproof dependability.

First Bak-4 prism is recommended for bright, sharp, high quality images. Binocular optics should be fully multi-coated for protection and image quality. Roof prism binoculars are much better for hunting because they offer sturdy durability when you are tracking.

Bushnell Powerview 16x50 BinocularBushnell Powerview 16×50 Binocular

Bushnell PowerView binoculars are the best of both worlds, combining contemporary styling and design with traditional Bushnell quality and durability. A variety of styles and features appeals to a wide range of observers from students of nature to concertgoers. Outstanding light transmission through fully coated optics ensures bright, crisp clear viewing. The easy to hold and easy to use aspect of these binoculars also converge to make Bushnell PowerView an excellent value for the general and outdoor use. Standard-size models feature InstaFocus for fast and easy focus on a moving target.

Outdoor optics, whether night vision binoculars, specialist hunting binoculars, toughened waterproof binoculars or compact binoculars, come in 8×42 or 10×42 magnification, which is perfect for a variety of requirements. The 8×42 type is ideal for dusk, night or early morning hunting – any time when the natural light is low. If you are hunting in wooded and bushy areas, your vision will be reduced so 8x would be the best magnification. If you are in open areas and the light is better, the 10x magnification would be better, so you can see further away.

Nikon 7238 Action Ex Extreme 8 X 40 mm All Terrain BinocularsNikon 7238 Action Ex Extreme 8 X 40 mm All Terrain Binoculars

The newest ATB offering from Nikon is modeled from the best selling Action series roof prism binocular. Like all ATB’s, the Action EX is nitrogen filled and o-ring sealed for years of waterproof, fogproof and shockproof performance. A truly extreme and rugged binocular, the Action EX is built on an all-metal chassis with all optical components installed in a lightweight polycarbonate shell. The Eco-Glass lens system provides bright and tremendously clear images, while the streamlined body is rubber coated for a non-slip grip wet or dry.

Key Features to Look For in a Pair of Hunting Binoculars

Binoculars with range finders.  The rangefinder works by using a laser beam, which is emitted to the target and sent back to the binoculars. There is a chip built into the binoculars, which calculates and displays the exact range. This is great for hunters who do not have a scope but need to know the distance immediately. A few seconds can make all the difference when it comes to hunting, as any keen hunter will know.

Night vision is another very important feature on hunting binoculars. They work by using electronics in the optics to create a phosphorous image of your target. You can adjust the resulting display. Birding binoculars also use large lenses, to allow more light to enter. This means the resulting image is of greater quality. Try to check out the online retailer who specializes in the type of binoculars you would prefer. This means you can access the best information about the viewing optics most suitable for the big or small game hunting you plan to do.

Waterproof Binoculars

are essential gear when tracking through deep forest or rugged terrain.  Non waterproof binoculars tend to get damaged in outdoor activities that involve climbing and unusual times of use.  They tend to get dropped and fallen upon.  Their is no guarantee that the group is not moist or a lake or pond. From hunting and fishing to hiking and boating, all of these activities can be influenced by wet weather conditions making it even more important to have a pair of waterproof binoculars. Here are four tips to buying a pair of waterproof binoculars.

Bushnell H2O 12x42 Waterproof/Fogproof BinocularBushnell H2O 12×42 Waterproof/Fogproof Binocular

Like the name says, these binoculars are made for water. Splash them, soak them, dunk them – and they’ll emerge 100% fog free and dry inside. Perfect for skiers, snowmobilers, anglers and kayakers. True waterproof construction and a rugged, non-slip rubber design makes the H2O series a simple choice for those whose lifestyle borders on the hyper side of active. O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged for waterproof/fogproof protection in any season, both the fully and the multi-coated optics render bright, clear images. Take them with you – everywhere.

Bushnell H2O 10x42 Waterproof/Fogproof Binocular w/Roof PrismBushnell H2O 10×42 Waterproof/Fogproof Binocular w/Roof Prism

Spend enough time on the water, and your equipment will spend some time in it. That’s why Bushnell had the foresight to build the H20 series of binoculars, which are O-ring-sealed and nitrogen-purged to complete lock out moisture should you spill water on the housing, take your binoculars overboard, or simply run into foul weather along the way. The H20 binoculars feature rubber armoring with textured pads to give you a sturdy grip in slippery situations.

1) Look for Binocular that have Nitrogen filled construction

Nitrogen gas is an dry inert gas which does not fall prey to condensation buildup inside the binocular lens. Make sure your waterproof binoculars use nitrogen gas inside the objective lens chamber as well as the eyepiece.

2) Eyepiece design

Many waterproof binoculars user should consider a goggle eyepiece design. With a goggle design, there is no gap between your eye and the eyepiece, thus preventing water or fog from getting into the eyepiece and reducing your visibility.

3) Multiple layer casing or coating

The use of multi layers makes the lenses more resistant to water droplets forming on the outside of the lenses. These coatings also improve the brightness level of the binoculars.

4) Rugged water resistant casing

The casing of the binoculars need to be made of a water resistant material with proper sealing at the interface between the casing and the lens. Also, the material should be able to resist damage from being bumped or dropped.

are some of the handiest and most widespread of all optical instruments.  Their size make them perfect for sightseers, birdwaters or just anybody who spends much time outdoors, compact binoculars are just a great tool.

Carrying normal size binoculars look distances can weight you down.  The size and bulk tends to slow down hiking and add unnecessary weight to an already heavy pack.  If you are reluctant to carring heavy or large binoculars with you, then a pair of compact binoculars is an ideal choice. They are portable, handy, lightweight and easy to carry. Compact binoculars are ergonomically designed and are the best choice in terms of value for the money.

Compact binoculars are mostly used by travelers, sportsmen, hunters, bird watchers, and nature lovers. The first thing to know about a compact binocular is that it is two small telescopes mechanically linked together. Each telescope has an objective lens, an eyepiece, and an exit pupil. Compact binoculars have a very small objective lens, and this feature makes them user friendly. They can be folded to a very small size. Compact binoculars are generally guarded with rubber padding, and they come with a case and hanging strip.

Well know  manufactures carry a wide variety of compact binoculars in different models suitable for various sports and entertainment purposes such as nature viewing, hiking, bird watching, bushwalking, and outdoor sports. They can be kept in small bags or pockets. Most compact binoculars provide a wide field view and bright images. A few compact binoculars come filled with nitrogen and are waterproof. Compact binoculars are of enormous use to outdoor enthusiasts and travelers.

The anti-reflective lens coating on compact binoculars reduces glare to a great extent. They provide bright images, quality viewing, and total reflection control. These lenses have only limited light-gathering ability, but their high optical quality beats this disadvantage. Most compact binoculars have an ultraviolet protective lens that safeguards your eyes. Compact binoculars with their high-quality optics offer excellent edge-to-edge contrast and sharpness. Most compact binoculars have built-in di-optic correction to adjust to the eyesight of different users.

How to Choose the Best Hunting Binoculars

Hunting binoculars are a highly important item to any hunter. They can also be useful if you like to fish or hike. Hunting binoculars will be used outdoors, probably in rough terrain, so it is vital to look for a pair which are built to last and stand up to the odd fall or scrape. Rubber armor and o-ring sealed, nitrogen-purged housing give you complete fog-proof and waterproof dependability. You might like to have a look at some military binoculars.

If you want bright, sharp, high quality images, a Bak-4 prism is recommended. The binocular optics should be fully multi-coated for protection and image quality. Roof prism binoculars are much better for hunting because they offer sturdy durability when you are tracking.

Features of Hunting Binoculars

It is a good idea to read some reviews of hunting binoculars before you go and buy any. You should compare different manufacturers of binoculars, such as Leupold, Steiner and Swarouski, who make high quality outdoor binoculars and spotting scopes. The rangefinder binocular works very well because it is important to know exactly how far away the game is.

Tips for Choosing Your Binoculars

• What do you need your binoculars for? You might be seeking hunting binoculars, birding binoculars, marine use, compact or night vision binoculars – or maybe a pair for two or more activities.

• The lenses are extremely important because they are your viewing platform. Ensure the lenses have been optically ground and are coated for protection. A fully multi-coated lens is usually superior and more hardy.

• Check the binoculars are of high quality and that they are well made. Look at the body and see how it is protected. A hard rubber shell, for instance, is good for tough, outdoor usage.

• Decide which magnification is going to suit your needs the best. If you need to be able to see a long way, you might want to get high-power binoculars but remember that the higher the magnification, the lower the image quality and resulting field of vision.

• Compare a few different binoculars to see how your eyes feel in the eyepieces and how much they weigh. Ensure the optics have a good, comfortable neck strap. You might prefer waterproof or water-resistant binoculars. An anti-fog coating for the lens might also be a good idea.

• Check the focal adjustment – is it easy to use? Does it move silently and smoothly and give good results? Is it located where you want? (Most are located at the nose bridge).

Binoculars are a Personal Choice

There are plenty of things to bear in mind when thinking about buying binoculars. Many of the options involve personal preferences such as how heavy you want them to be, how strong you think they need to be for your purpose or what extra features they have. The best way to choose a pair of hunting binoculars is to spend as long as you need researching what is available and what is within your budget. This is not a decision to be rushed because a perfect pair of hunting binoculars will make your hunting adventures many times more exciting and a lot more enjoyable.

Digital Camera Binoculars,Taking Digital Cameras To A New Level Of Photo Imaging

Digital Camera Binoculars| Taking Digital cameras to a new level of photo imaging

Taking pictures while bird watching is one of the many fun activities that bird enthusiasts engage in as they get closer to nature. Digital camera binoculars will allow you to not only find your favorite bird species but to get digital photos at the same time.

This type of binocular provides high-quality images, they are quite compact and come with high-quality optics that provide superior picture taking ability. Digital camera binoculars are the latest in innovation where technology makes it possible to not just look, but keep a visual record of your adventures.

Camera binoculars come in both spotting scopes and night vision varieties and allow you to download your images onto the desktop or laptop computer. The digital camera binocular combos are used both by professional as well as recreational users.

Camera binoculars are digital so you don’t need to fuss with film or wait for pictures to be developed. Simply download and view your images immediately on your computer or use the digital LCD screen that comes with the binoculars for a small preview. The LCD screen is a instant preview so you can replay the events you’ve recorded and delete the ones you don’t want.

Live video is also possible on many binoculars and gives you about 20 seconds or more of live video so that you aren’t limited to still shots. This is top of the line binocular technology and has been in high demand since they were introduced. The combination of binocular and digital camera sells for less than if you bought each piece separately and makes a very positive addition to your birdwatching pursuits.

Finding the best digital camera binoculars

There are a few major manufacturers who provide the best digital camera binoculars on the market today including Barska, Bushnell, Meade and Celestron. These companies are noted for providing high-quality digital camera binoculars at the best prices on the market today. They strive for optical excellence and manufacture very good products.

Avid sports people who don’t want to miss a moment of the action choose from these companies knowing that they will capture the view and action at a moment’s notice. Combining birding binoculars with a camera is a great way to record all the bird sightings that you encounter.

The number of pictures and video clips will depend, not on the memory of the camera, but the size of the flash card utilized. The minimum size on the market today is 64 meg; however, today flash cards are so cheap, you might want to invest a few bucks in a 1 gig card. You can always carry a extra photo memory card in your accessory bag as well.

There are two main features you should be on the watch for when researching digital camera binoculars – objective lens size and magnification power. Objective lens size will determine your field of view and magnification power and should be at least 7x, 8x or 10x. You will want to check and determine if the digital camera is well made and that it has features like good resolution; a clear display LCD and a video capture option. You’ll also want to look into whether your prospective purchase is tripod-ready for pictures and video recording.

Digital camera binocular tips

Whether you finally decided on the standard-sized or compact binoculars, there are a few things to consider so that you get the best results. Go for the best that you can afford and think of it as an investment that will last a long time. Don’t go for the least expensive or you may regret it in the future. Try out different types and research in places like Consumer Reports online for digital camera binocular reviews. Get a feel for each of them as they will be yours for a while and figure out your personal preferences.

Try to find binoculars that are both lightweight, durable and water resistant because you are engaging in an outside activity. Remember that the environment and terrain may be rugged while you are taking photographs. You’ll want the optics of the camera catches delicate details and minute colors with a good degree of accuracy.

Speed of focus is essential when bird watching because you’ll be capturing quick shots, zooming in and out and it would be very helpful if you can zoom in on your subject. Camera binoculars should also work well in low light as well as regular and bright light situations. Special digital binoculars are a piece of sensitive equipment, and should be protected with accessories from lens caps to carrying cases. Always keep the binoculars on a strap around your neck to avoid accidental dropping as well.

Benefits and features of digital camera binoculars

Take your time in choosing a pair of digital camera binoculars. There are several different makes, models and styles with optional specs that you can add to your camera. That’s why you’ll want to do your research prior to purchase. All binoculars are great for bird watching, hiking, boating and hunting; however, you’ll want to take that extra step to get the right pair for you. It all depends on your personal preferences when it comes to buying a pair of digital camera binoculars. So take your time.

Why buy Nikon Compact Binoculars

Compact Nikon binoculars are the handiest and most versatile of all optical instruments I have trialled. For those people who spend a lot of time outdoors I highly recommend you try them out.

If you are the type of person who does a lot of walking or traveling with their binoculars, then an ideal choice is a compact pair of binoculars. They are lightweight, portable, and very easy to carry. In my opinion they are the best choice in terms of value for the money, and the have the added benefit of being ergonomically designed.

The Nikon range of compact binoculars is extensive and will have a pair to suit your needs. These may be sporting (watching your favorite team from the stands), hunting (they won’t weigh you down or take much space), birdwatching (you can hold them steady for long periods without tiring), or just everyday nature lovers. There are even pairs that are filled with nitrogen and waterproof models.

Some of the brilliant user friendly features of compact binoculars is that they have a very small objective lens, and they can be folded to fit in your pocket or a small pouch. You must ensure that your binoculars have a good quality coating on the lenses. This coating reduces glare and protects your eyes from UV rays, and increases the definition and clarity of an object. Remember you get what you pay for, so ensure you buy a good quality pair to prevent disappointment in the field.

It is a real treat for kids to go on nature walks or hikes with their parents, however we all remember how heavy the binoculars were for us as kids, right. Compact binoculars are an ideal first pair for children, they are easy to use and lightweight which means the kids get more enjoyment out of their outdoor activities, and spend less time moaning about having to hold those heavy old things your dad gave you.

It is easy to get boggled by the amount of binoculars on the market, particularly with a pushy salesman on your back. Check out these great reviews of Nikon Compact Binoculars, before you shop.

How Good Are Nikon Action Binoculars?

I’ve been an active outdoors-man for about thirty years now, I can still remember the first time my dad took me hiking in the mountains. It was a wet cold and intermittently rainy weekend, but it was one of the best of my childhood. My dad had an old pair of Nikon binoculars that seemed to weigh a ton, and took up about as much room in his backpack as my sleeping bag. It was the first time I ever saw wildlife up close, I remember seeing bears, deer, and so many bird species that I was hooked on the outdoors for life.

Every time I pick up a pair of binoculars now I remember that old pair my dad had, I wish I still had them now to compare with the new Nikon Action pair that I have recently bought. I needed a new pair as I had accidentally dropped my old set in a river and they never really recovered. I decided this time that I had to get a good quality waterproof pair that would fill my active needs. I settled on a pair of Nikon 10×50 Action Extreme ATB Binoculars. These binoculars are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed for total waterproof and fog-proof performance in any environment. The binocular bodies are ergonomically shaped for ease of use, and can be attached to a tripod if you want. they are fully coated in rubber for a non-slip grip, when either wet or dry.

The lenses on the Nikon Action Binoculars have multi-layered anti-reflective coatings which deliver optimum clarity of objects. They offer true color picture, with high contrast, and are perfect for almost any lighting conditions. You can customize the eyepieces for every users eyes, even if you wear glasses, and the diopter control allows you to correct for normal vision imbalance between your right and left eyes.

These Nikon action binoculars are ideal for hunters and nature lovers alike, who need a high quality low-weight pair, that can be quickly and easily used no matter what the conditions.

Nikon Monarch Binoculars Are the Best

I brought my pair of Nikon Monarch Binoculars about four months ago and I fell in love with them straight away. I brought them mainly for bird watching, and as I wanted a good pair of binoculars I spent quite a bit of time researching. They have a really nice feel are well balanced and weigh only 689grams with the strap on! I’ve even dropped them once on concrete and there was no damage done. Not long after I got them I took them with me for a Safari to Kenya, Africa.

The first time I used them was in the evening – I was standing on a small hill looking into a valley with the sun going down. Without the binoculars I couldn’t see the small villages or the people, however, when I looked through the Monarch’s I could see all the mud houses in the villages and even make out the faces on the people. The optic quality of the Nikon Monarch Binoculars is really good.

My father in-law, has been bird watching for 30 years and he thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread. I have been invited along with him much more since I bought them. The quality is fantastic for the price you pay . You could easily spend over $2,000 on a pair of top class Nikons but if you broke them or lose them it would really break you. With my Monarchs I wouldn’t loose too much sleep if anything happened to them.

Another other thing is that the way technology is moving the $2,000 optics will be $500 within about 5 years.

I also used my Nikon Monarch Binoculars to view the lunar eclipse last week and had a great view of the moon in shadow. Within our group we had three different pairs of very good quality binoculars to watch the eclipse and the view from my Nikons was by far the best! I had to share them out among everyone for the duration of the eclipse.

I have to finish by saying that I don’t anticipate ever switching to another model of binoculars. These have passed my tests, again and again, with flying colors. Highly recommended

If the above article hasn’t convinced you maybe this review will! I know how frustrating it can be trying to choose that perfect pair of binoculars for your activities. That’s why I’ve written in-depth reviews of Nikon Monarch Binoculars. these will save you time and inform you before you choose to buy.

Why I Bought My Nikon Monarch Binoculars

I really like these binoculars. That sounds a bit simplistic so I’ll go into a bit of detail as to why.

First, they are light, work well with glasses, and are very bright, they also get five stars from me for their excellent value. I bought these binoculars for a kayaking trip on the Colorado, but now I use them in the back yard, on hikes and even at concerts and football games. My brother is a marine biologist and spends alot of time with his binoculars looking for whales, told me to get the most expensive binoculars I could afford. To him binoculars are a professional tool, however, I really couldn’t afford $1000 like he could. She also told me to try out binoculars in dim conditions and to get the 10×42 rather than 8×42 because you can look at objects further away.

I did some comparisons between the Nikon Monarch and a similar spec Leica, which was nice but much heavier. The Leica was probably better, but was definitely not worth three times the price. On my kayaking trip I had opportunities to compare my new binoculars with other people. Most of my friends had brought cheap binoculars fearing that they would get lost or damaged on the river, and as a result I think their wildlife watching experience was severely compromised. The only person who had a similar quality pair of binoculars was an avid bird watcher. They had bought a pair of Nikon compacts which were lower spec’ed that mine but also lower in price. Again, they were excellent binoculars and very light and compact.

The hard rubber-armor construction of the Monarchs is very appealing. They don’t get slippery when wet. They are very rugged but light. I don’t feel as nervous about dropping them as I would be with the more expensive Leica. They also have very handy turn-and slide eyecups which are much better than the older style soft foldable rubber eyecups found on other binoculars.

Like most other products, when you are looking for binoculars, as the price goes up, the quality improves. You need to make sure you have your price range sorted out before you start looking, that way you will not be disappointed.

I know how frustrating it can be trying to choose that perfect pair of binoculars for your activities. That’s why I’ve written in-depth reviews of Nikon Monarch Binoculars, these will save you time and inform you before you choose to buy.

Binoculars Are Perfect For Travel

Raise binoculars to your eyes and you can see everything far away as if it was right in front of you. Once you’ve looked through them, you want to see everything through your binoculars! They make everything closer and clearer. You won’t be able to go to a sports game, a show or concert or even to the beach without them.

They are now made smaller and lighter than before. Binoculars will become one of your favorite travel accessories. Pack them and you’ll be looking off into the distance bringing everything so much closer. Tasco, Bushnell and Minolta are three of the most popular brands in the marketplace. There are many different features to look for when making your purchase. Coated optics will reduce light loss and glare, while giving you brighter image with less eyestrain. The soft or rubber fold-down eye cups will give eyeglass wearers a better view by allowing them to see the entire field. Boaters and those that enjoy the water will want the waterproof or fog proof models.

They can withstand complete immersion in water and remain dry on the inside. The fog proof models have interior optical surfaces that won’t fog due to rapid temperature changes or humidity. The waterproof models are airtight and dry-nitrogen sealed. They should not be confused with water-repellent models. The waterproof models will be corrosion resistant and buoyant, not just repelling water from the lens. Many of the binoculars come with a carry case that can attach to a belt. Others have comfortable straps so you can wear them around your neck.

Some of the binoculars have a greater close up focus capability. These are ideal for bird and insect watchers. You can see as close as seven feet. The newer binoculars are very lightweight making them ideal to pack in your lightweight luggage. They will not add measurable weight to your luggage. They now weigh in ounces rather than pounds. You can get a closer look of mountain ranges in the United States or museums in Europe. Binoculars allow you to take in all of the details from a distance. They are also the perfect accessories for hiking, fishing and hunting. Many of these binoculars are now made of magnesium to be lighter and slimmer. They are generally shockproof and rugged enough for any travel. There are models available that allow you to do more than just “look.” Some of them have digital cameras built in, and you can photograph items a distance away. These are wonderful for any sporting events, or children’s activities. There are also models with compasses built in, to keep you always on track when camping.

Another popular feature that has been available on opera glasses is permanent focus. This allows you to pass the binoculars from person to person, or item to item without having to change the focus. You can catch any action with clarity immediately. The focus is instantaneous and virtually at any distance. You don’t have to worry about wearing any gloves, which sometimes hampers the focus usage. These make perfect corporate gifts. The company name or logo can be imprinted or silk-screened on the binoculars themselves or on the carry case. They’re perfect for men or women and always appreciated. Everyone asks how to understand the magnification on binoculars. It’s really easy when you know how. The first number separated by the “x” is the power of the binocular, and means the object being viewed appears to be that number of times closer than you would see without the binoculars. The larger the second number after the “x”, the more light that enters the binocular and the image will become brighter.

Also look at the len’s coating when making your purchase of binoculars. A single layer is on at least one lens surface and fully coated lens are a single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces. Multiple-coated lenses are on at least one lens, while fully multi-coated means all of the air-to-glass surfaces are coated with multiple layers. This gives a brighter image due to reducing light loss and glare. You’ll get better results and less eyestrain. Higher quality glass also yields brighter images and sharpness. With the right binoculars, you’ll be immersed in looked at the world around you. You’ll see everything clearer and you won’t want to travel without them. Keep a pair in your discount luggage, at the ready to give you a close up view of wherever you’re going.

The Best Ways To Attract Wild Birds To Your Backyard

If you want to attract as many wild birds to your garden as possible, it is up to you to provide for all their needs. Fortunately it does not take too much work to attract a variety of beautiful guests to your outdoor ‘hotel’- as long as you know what they’re looking for.

PROVIDING THE RIGHT FOOD

What you want more than anything is to become known as a reliable feeding spot. Wild birds will find several feeding areas that they will visit regularly, by offering a good supply you will make it onto their feeding route. Be patient, however, as they become familiar with your offerings. Some birds may only start feeding in your yard when other sources have become scarce, but if they like it they’ll be sure to return.

Different species prefer different foods so provide a variety of seeds, berries and natural sources of nourishment to attract the greatest variety of birds. You might start with black sunflower seeds, white millet or safflower seeds. Try various seeds to determine what offerings are preferred by the birds in your area.

Provide the food from several sources since each species has a different preference. The ground is an easy place to scatter seeds and will attract small birds like sparrows. Safflower is unappealing to squirrels so putting it on a raised platform that is attached to a pole, your windowsill or a porch railing, will discourage them from stealing it from birds that prefer to eat above the ground.

Other birds prefer a hanging feeder. Place it in a tree or on your home where you can view it easily from inside.

Planting shrubs and trees that provide a natural source of seeds or berries will be a big draw for your yard. Dogwoods have a sweet fruit many birds like and holly will provide nourishment in the winter when the more favored berries are hard to find or already eaten.

OFFERING FRESH WATER

Birds love a fresh supply of water. You can make your offer of water as humble as a large bowl on a tree stump or as elaborate as a pond – your birds won’t care. Moving water will prevent mosquitos from breeding but you can also take care to empty and refill a bird bath to prevent breeding as well.

Winter makes it difficult for birds to find unfrozen water so be sure to use a bird bath with a heater or replace the water as necessary.

NESTING AND PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS

Thick trees like evergreens make a good home, offering protection from predators and harsh elements. Thick grasses and shrubs also provide protection and nesting areas.

Choose plants that can be left to seed and you will be offering both home and food to your little guests – ensuring they will find your yard the perfect home for them and their little ones year after year.

Connect Kids to Nature Through Bird Watching

What child hasn’t been delighted to see his first bird up close? Maybe it was a humble sparrow or a squawking seagull – whatever they are, birds are a natural delight to watch and can be seen anywhere in the world.

If you are looking for an activity that you can enjoy with your children, whether they’re five or 15, you might want to consider the popular hobby of bird watching. It is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in America – and a great way for families to enjoy time together.

“What IS Bird Watching?”

Bird watching is more than just observing birds. It is an interest in the actual birds – their names, markings, activities, songs and habitats. Not only does it encourage a child (or an adult) to learn about birds, but gets them outside and builds an appreciation of local wildlife and nature.

Bird watching doesn’t require a strong knowledge of birds; you can learn with your children as you begin to locate and identify local wild birds. You can keep a list of the birds you’ve spotted and help one another identify what you’ve seen by making notes of the color, size and markings on the bird. You may even start to learn their calls and can challenge yourself to identify the birds by their songs.

“Where Can We Go to Bird Watch?”

Bird watching can be as simple an activity as setting up a bird feeder in your backyard and watching the local wild birds that come to you. However, your children will no doubt appreciate time spent outdoors, properly geared up for an outing of bird watching with you.

You will soon learn about the specific habitats that birds live in around your home. As you become familiar with local birds you may even want to take trips to areas that will feature different species than you have locally. Watch as your children eagerly try to identify these new birds before you do!

“What Do We Need?”

Bird watching is a very inexpensive hobby. If you are going to be outside you will want everyone to have proper attire – including an extra pair of socks and a hat.

Other than that you will need at least one pair of binoculars, although it is more fun if everyone has their own pair so nobody misses out on a sighting. A bird book (called a field guide) will help you to identify the birds you see. You should find one that features birds in your area since it will also give you suggestions about where to find them.

If your children are older, or you catch the bird watching bug, you should also take a notepad and camera. Take notes on birds you can’t identify and look them up at home with your children to determine what you saw. You might also develop a list of local birds and check them off as you see them. This is great for kids who thrive on challenge!

Bird watching is a fantastic hobby that the whole family can enjoy. Try it one afternoon and see for yourself how your family bonds while enjoying the fresh air and local scenery!

Exploring the Moon with Your Child

Every child, at some point in their life, notices the moon. As adults, we probably tend to ignore it. But for children, the wonder is just being awakened. For some kids, its a phase. For others, it may be the beginning of a life long love of astronomy.

If you know very little about astronomy, the moon is a very easy place to start. Here’s some ideas to help you explore the moon with your children.

First, learn the moon phases. You can buy or download calendars with the moon phases. Numerous websites can also give you that information. This will help you know where the moon might be on any given day. It will also help you explain to your child how the moon changes over the course of the month. Your child will probably enjoy comparing their observations to the calendar. When you begin, try and catch the full, first quarter, and third quarter moons.

Next, start a sketch book. Every few days, find the moon and start drawing what you see. Now that you know the basics of the lunar phases, start filling in the details. Notice the darker areas and sketch them in. Add the date, time, and lunar phase to your drawings. Try and sketch the moon during daytime and early morning hours as well. The different sky conditions will change the details you can seen on the moon’s surface.

This is also a good time to start looking at the moon through binoculars or a small telescope. Anything will work, and sometimes the lower power telescopes or binoculars are easier to use. If you have young children, stick to binoculars. They can use them without your help. At this point, the best views are crescent moons, since the full and gibbous moons are very bright. Add more details to your drawings.

Now you’re ready for a map of the moon. You can find them online, or at the library. When you begin, use the simplest maps you can find. Start learning the major craters, and compare them to your previous drawings. Using binoculars or a small telescope, look for specific features of the moon. Even young children can easily find the larger craters.

Finally, add star maps. By now, you have a good understanding of lunar phases and lunar geography. Now, in your sketches, add background stars. You can compare them to star maps, and start learning your way around the nighttime sky.

Telescopes for the Amateur Astronomer

Telescopes offer two advantages to the amateur astronomer. The most important is the ability to intercept more light from an object. The second is resolving power, the ability to separate the fine detail of objects that are close together. This is very important when observing planetary detail or double stars. The diameter (aperture) of the telescope’s principal light collector, which can be a lens or a mirror, determines both of these advantages.

Although most people think of telescopes it may be best to consider binoculars first. They are portable, convenient and relatively inexpensive. Cheap binoculars are better than a cheap telescope. Consider something like 7 x 35 binoculars. The 7 is the magnification produced by the eyepiece, the other number is the aperture in millimeters. This size is light and easy to hold.

If you are considering a telescope there are essentially three types available to the amateur astronomer.

Refractors are the most readily recognized type and consist of lenses at both ends of a tube. Whatever you do avoid the cheap models sold by department, nature/science and toy stores. They quote large magnifications, but their small apertures make them useless for astronomy. Remember a telescope’s most important job is to collect light, not magnify a image. A normal terrestrial telescope has an extra lens to ensure the image is the right way up. However extra lenses cut down the amount of light reaching the eye. The one thing an astronomer wants to avoid is reducing light and therefore information. So the correcting lens is omitted and a true astronomical telescope gives an upside down (inverted) image. Lenses can create false rainbow tints around very bright objects like planets. This is called chromatic aberration and can be ignored or corrected by a filter. Refractors generally cost more per inch of aperture than other types of telescope, and those of more than 4-inch (100mm) aperture are rather long and cumbersome. However smaller good quality ones can make excellent beginner instruments.

The second type of telescope is the reflector. Light travels down a tube before reflecting off a couple of mirrors and through an eyepiece on the side of the tube. Reflectors need to be larger than a refractor to be equally useful. They do not suffer chromatic aberration, but the main mirror may occasionally need repolishing or realigning (collimating). There are kits available for this. Reflectors are often the most comfortable telescopes to use because of the eyepiece position. You don’t have to kneel and possess an elastic neck to look straight upwards as you would with a reflector. A popular type of reflector is the Dobsonian, which has a mount near the ground rather than a tripod.

The third type of telescope is the Schmidt-Cassegrain. This uses lenses and mirrors to fold the light path back on itself within a compact tube. They are generally cheaper than refractors, but dearer than reflectors. They are more portable and easier to handle than the other two.

Telescope specifications may quote f/numbers.These have no affect on the image you see, but can affect the exposure needed if you get into astrophotography. It’s best to avoid astrophotography to start with. Become familiar with the sky and your telescope first.

You may be able to evaluate the different instruments by joining a local astronomy club or attending one of their star parties. Check at your local library. You can also look in a reputable astronomy magazine for reviews and manufacturers advertising good quality telescopes.

Although you should buy the biggest aperture you can afford, don’t get a large telescope if you will have to carry it a long way. A smaller telescope would be easier to set up and therefore more likely to be used. You will also be wasting your money on a large telescope if light pollution and atmospheric turbulence in your area are high, as you won’t be getting the best from the instrument.

The general rule for calculating the maximum practical magnification a telescope can achieve is to double the aperture in millimeters, e.g. a 100mm aperture telescope should have a maximum magnification of 200x. So spend the majority of your budget on getting a larger aperture, not more accessories. Do not be tempted to buy an eyepiece that will allegedly stretch magnification beyond the maximum value calculated from the aperture. If given a choice of eyepieces start off simple. A Kellner is a good general-purpose eyepiece and a Barlow lens placed between a focuser and eyepiece can triple magnification.

A telescope also magnifies the movement of objects across the sky and the instrument will have to be moved repeatedly to keep the object in the field of view. To cope with this different mounts and drives have been devised that enable the telescope to follow the moving object. You can get electronic drives to point the telescope, but the most important thing is that the mount is sturdy.

It is important to realize that many textbook and telescope advertisement photos are long exposures with false colors added. Stars seen through a telescope will always look like points of light, and you will not see color in dim objects. The eye is not sensitive enough.

So what can you expect to see with a beginners telescope? A 3-inch (75mm) refractor or 6-inch (150mm) reflector will allow you to see many galaxies and nebulae, Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s largest moons and hundreds of craters on the moon. Plenty of wonderful objects to serve as an introduction to the night sky.

Bird Watching – A Fantastic Hobby

Bird watching is a fantastic hobby. It, in many ways, is similar to hunting, only in this instance you do your “shooting” with a pair of binoculars, perhaps even a camera, a bird identification book, a notebook and pencil. You can do your bird watching from the comfort of your own home by using a bird feeder to lure the birds closer or you can go out into the woods, fields or aquatic locations and look for them. Perhaps a combination of all three works the best. This is a hobby and should be enjoyable, so whatever you choose to do is “right” for you.

Putting up a bird feeder is a good way to start. You will want to give careful thought to the kind of bird feeder that you put up. You don’t want to put up something that will be accessible to the neighbor’s cat, do you? After all, you want to watch these birds, not lure them to their deaths.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Find out if there are any other known “birdbrains” in your town or neighborhood and get acquainted. If someone in your area is well known to be a bird watcher and others know about this person, chances are that this person would welcome a call from someone who is sincerely interested in pursuing this new hobby and wants to do it the right way. You could also scout out any local bird watching groups or events. Conducting a thorough search in the community newspaper or library may lead you to like minded enthusiasts.

Once you have decided what is the proper way to proceed with acquiring a bird feeder, you will want to check them out and purchase the one that you want, along with a supply of birdseed that is right for the birds in your area and is the amount which you are willing and able to store and use as you go along.

You will now want to decide where to install your bird feeder. You will want to put it in a place where it will not be disturbed by the “house traffic”, that is, the comings and goings of people in and out of your home on a day to day business. You will also want to install it in a place that will be easily accessed by the person or persons who will be in charge of keeping the feeder filled with food. Now, with your bird identification book and your notebook and pencil handy, get ready to sit back and enjoy. You may have your binoculars and camera already acquired as a part of your equipment for this new hobby or you may decide to wait to add to your stock as you go along and can afford it.

It won’t take the birds long to discover this new supply of goodies. Get ready for a real treat as you learn more about our feathered friends and find that your life is more and more “for the birds”.

How Antique Binoculars Arouse Enormous Interest From Collectors

Is it possible to fix antique scopes or binoculars so that they can be used today? Antiques command great respect, but modern appliances offer advantages that old models do not have. Collectors are aware of antiques coming on the market. They hunt for old optics and they find them in pawnshops, at garage sales, swap meets, camera shows, utilizing every possible opportunity. Collections of antique telescopes, binoculars, lenses, and old tools and equipment are a bold reminder of yesterday. This is the “show and tell” of history; preserved collectors are professional people, as well as amateur astronomers. Librarians and researchers record this history in museums and journal publications.

An Antique Telescope Society was formed just over a decade ago. This international organization of more than 200 collectors and antique dealers has established ongoing support for maintenance, restoration, and preservation of antique instruments. Some of the members own an antique instrument, but others do not. All share an avid interest in the preservation of antique instruments, and they have a strong commitment to education. Preservation techniques are made available through scheduled workshops and journal articles, as well. In an effort to preserve the accumulated information of this optic society, members have collaborated in writing biographies of persons who have made significant contributions in the development of telescopes and binoculars. As this research is shared, the benefits are enjoyed on a global scare.

The Antique Telescope Society does not assign monetary values to antique instruments. Individual members and dealers provide price information for buying or selling items. Seasoned collectors/dealers often discuss or trade information on the antique instruments. Collecting is expensive. A person, who is a member of the Antique Telescope Society, may own an antique instrument, or they may not. A member who has a genuine interest in the history of telescopes and the preservation of these antique instruments will be an asset to the organization and they will benefit from membership.

How old must a telescope be to be considered antique? Age is a factor, but a real antique must be complete and in good condition. Perfect items are rare. Research of the history of telescopes will show comparative examples. Recording the life of the instrument using oral history will establish its viability.

Antique binoculars and telescopes are attractive buys for collectors, while a vintage spyglass has its own unique appeal. With the fine art of restoration, a greater number of artifacts are salvaged. The historical roots of telescopes present exciting challenges for collectors and dealers, as well. Research is most relevant, when recorded in a timely manner, as sage members of the Antique Telescope Society hold the technical knowledge that is critical. This knowledge must be compiled for the good of collectors and dealers. The value of antique binoculars and their counterparts has increased while the inventory of these antiques in circulation has also grown.

The Best in Bird Watching Binoculars

Trying to read and interpret all of the jargon about various bird watching binoculars can be a little difficult if you are new to it. You will probably find that all of the manufacturers think their product is the best, and that nothing else is worth looking at. If you are like most consumers, you want a place to go where you can find an honest opinion and some accurate information. If you do not live in an area where you can just walk into a specialty optics store and ask, do not worry, there are some resources available.

There are several such guides available to those who are in market for bird watching binoculars. Bird Watchers Digest publishes a review of the latest models and improvements every year. Additionally, a number of Web sites publish product reviews on a regular basis. Some sites even have entire sections devoted specifically to binocular reviews and evaluation. Check out www.birdwatching.com/optics.html for one good example of Web based product reviews. Experienced birders offer their honest opinions about the products that they use on a regular basis and what they did and did not like about each one.

When researching bird watching binoculars, keep in mind several things that may affect which style will work best for you. If you wear glasses, then some binoculars may not work well for you. Do you wish to use the binoculars to focus on small things that may be relatively close? There are models like the Pentax Papillo, which will work very well when trying to zoom in on things like butterflies. When considering any binocular, a bird watcher needs to give careful thought to how much magnification power they need. While many are under the impression that they need the most powerful binocular available to enjoy watching birds, often times the most powerful optical tools can be very difficult to keep focused and to hold steady enough to get a clear image.

Some people in the market for bird watching binoculars pay no attention to price and do not consider cost to be of any importance. For most people, cost does play a large role in their decision. Do not get frustrated if at first all you see are slick catalogue pages full of extravagantly prices binoculars. You can, and will, find equipment from many reliable well-known manufacturers that is well made and quite affordable for the average bird watcher.

To ensure that you are pleased with your purchase, make sure that you do the research. As shown here, there are plenty of resources available outside of actually walking into a store. Bird watching binoculars will be your primary piece of equipment as you begin your bird watching hobby.

Choosing Boating Binoculars – What You Need To Know

Here we take a look at what you need to know when choosing Boating Binoculars. There are always new models but the inherent designs are still the same.

First thing to consider when looking at Binoculars is how we are going to use them. We mostly use them for Navigating which means we need to be able to spot channel markers. Most places specializing in Binoculars cover birding and hunting and astronomy which are too powerful for the marine environment. Boats are not stable and so anything with a power over 7 is going to have a blurred image due to hand shake or boat movement. Buy from a purveyor of Marine Boating Binoculars and make sure you try them.

How do Binoculars Work?

Binoculars work like two telescopes mounted side by side. At the front of each telescope is an objective or a field lens. This gathers light from the object you are looking at. Lets say you are looking at a lighthouse. The objective or field lens magnifies the image of the lighthouse, but it is the wrong way up. If you are using prism binoculars (they are the most popular type), a prism in each tube reverses and inverts the image of the lighthouse. In field glasses, there is a second lens instead of a prism. The light travels down the tube, and through a lens in the eyepieces, magnifying the image even further.

Binoculars are built around a frame that houses the two telescopes and are generally hinged to allow for adjustment for each person. Some binoculars are perma focus and never need adjustment. While others have a focusing wheel in the center to allow for manual focusing and a greater degree of fine tuning for sharper images. Other Binoculars have separate focusing of each eyepiece (known as Diopter Control) which allows for additional focusing.

What do those numbers mean?

Binoculars are often specified by a set of numbers such as 7 X 50 which are the most popular for boating. The first number indicates power or magnification i.e. how many times closer the object appears to you, in this case 7 times closer. The second number is the diameter of the objective lens (the larger lenses at the opposite end to the eyepiece) measured in millimeters. This determines how much light it can obtain for effective viewing. The larger the lens (higher number) allows a greater amount of light to pass through giving a brighter image. Larger objective lenses will give you the greater amounts of light but result in heavier and larger Binoculars.

Instead of the fixed variety you can try Zoom Binoculars which can be adjusted to give you varying ranges of magnification. For example, a binocular that is listed as 7-21×40mm means the zoom portion is capable of viewing at 7x power minimum and can be adjusted up to 21x power and the 40mm would be the objective lens size. Remember that magnifications over 10x – 12 xs are very difficult to hand-hold. In which case, a sturdy tripod is highly recommended.

Prism Types

Prisms are used to condense the viewed image for maximum magnification in a short space. Prisms recreate an image of the original that is much purer than any image you would get from multiple lenses.

There are two kinds of prisms used in binoculars: roof prisms and Porro prisms. You can tell which type of prism is used from the shape of the binoculars.

Porro prisms Binoculars are distinguishable by the narrower eye piece than the objective lens. The resulting jog in the light path being deflected through 180 degrees twice by the two prisms in the housing.

Roof prisms are indicated by the two straight tubes making them more compact and easier to hold. The Porro prism rendered better contrast and was still favored by purists for a long time after the advent of the roof prism but new technology of roof prisms has improved greatly, which makes newer models a better value.

The BAK-4 prism is made of a high quality glass and produces sharp images and good edge to edge sharpness. Generally, higher quality binoculars will use BAK-4 prisms in the construction process. Phase coated prisms take it one step further, the coating process enhances the resolution and contrast of images coming through the binocular and are generally applied only on more expensive binoculars.

Points to consider when buying Binoculars

Fit; Try them on and make sue they fit your grip and fit your face comfortably. Try them out in daylight and at night if relevant.

Coatings, if you look at the water surface, you will notice the glare of the sun shining on it. Lens coatings remove glare and allow more light to enter the optics. The more coatings a pair of Binoculars have the more expensive they are. Cheaper Binoculars do not have the coatings as better models and this can account for the wild variation in prices.

Focusing; which type of focusing is best for you? Center Focus with a wheel. The center wheel focuses at the same time for your eye, or can they compensate for unequal vision. This is by means of a dioptric correction through the adjustment of one eyepiece, usually the right-hand eyepiece.

Size and weight; do you want a pair that can fit in a pocket then the Roof Prism is more likely to work.

Do you need a compass? Binoculars are more expensive with a compass but there are benefits. Try compass position relative to your grip.

Are they waterproof, do they have Flotation straps, which are very handy if they are dropped overboard?

Summary

Waterproof Boating binoculars are typically 7 x 50 rubber armored design. The 7 magnification power number makes sense, when dealing with a moving boat. The relatively large objective (50mm) lens is desired to gathering more light which translates to increased contrast.

Night Vision Binoculars

Night-vision binoculars are one of the most popular products in the market. People from all age groups buy them. They help you to see things at a distance even in the dark. Most night-vision binoculars are used by security personnel. There are different “”generations”" of night-vision binoculars. The first-generation night-vision binoculars are very affordable and they amplify ambient light by a factor of 1,000. They are generally used by civilians.

Law enforcement agencies prefer to use second-generation binoculars. Their price is quite high, but they provide the user with very bright, sharp images. The clarity is very good. The third- and fourth-generation night-vision binoculars show much clearer images at night, and are priced higher that the previous generation binoculars.

When night-vision binoculars first came on the market they were very expensive status symbols. They used to be every expensive. But mass production and better technologies have brought down the price substantially, so that the common person can afford them.

Apart from a large number of big companies, there are local manufacturers which produce night-vision binoculars at a much lower cost. But still, a good pair of night-vision binoculars will cost at least a thousand dollars. You can find some secondhand models at affordable prices. But you’d better make sure that they have the proper range, power and clarity. The first generation binoculars might not prove effective if there is no light; however, the latest technology has ensured that even with no light, the infrared illuminator helps you see things in the distance with great clarity.

Binoculars Lens Protectors

Binoculars are two identical telescopes placed side-by-side that are designed to point accurately in the same direction. Binoculars come in different sizes and shapes to suit different purposes. Widely used for stargazing, bird watching, hunting, and fishing, binoculars are of great use to sport and nature lovers. Binoculars can be carried anywhere with you, from theatres to forests, from lakeshores to playgrounds.

It is important to protect binoculars from dust, mist, rain, fog, moisture, sunrays, fire, and fingerprints. Waterproof and fog-proof binoculars are now available. Nitrogen-filled binoculars resist water, rain, and moisture.

Many people prefer to carry binoculars around freely, rather than in a case. Fortunately, the new weatherproof binoculars are fit for rough use. But the optical surfaces still need protection from scratches and other damage. Under such circumstances, binocular lens protectors have to be used. Lens caps very often get misplaced, so binocular companies attach lens caps to the binocular. The latest binoculars come with attached lens protectors so that you can use them year round, regardless of time, climate, or season.

Binocular lens protectors drive water off the lens surface of both objective lenses and eyepieces, helping eliminate glare caused by water droplets. Water-shedding lens protectors have a special coating that allows water droplets to bounce off the surface, which helps reduce repeated cleaning of lens. Most binocular lens protectors are replaceable. Thus, after years of wear and tear, a new cover gives your binocular lens a fresh fortification.

Some binoculars come with special fire coating on the lenses. This special fire coating employs advanced technology that is designed to eliminate both infrared light and ultraviolet rays. Many binoculars come with a front cover, which protects binoculars from the rays of the sun.

Choosing Hunting Binoculars

It’s hard to track game if you can’t see it. Therefore, one of the most important accessories for hunters is a good pair of binoculars.

While there are literally thousands of different models of binoculars on the market, not all are suitable for hunting. Most are not rugged enough for the woods, marsh or field. Many are not suitable for low-light conditions. Some are too powerful, and others not powerful enough.

Here are some factors you should consider when choosing hunting binoculars.

Construction:

Hunting is a rugged sport that puts demands on your equipment.

Hunting binoculars should feature some sort of rubberized exterior armoring to protect them from being damaged if dropped or bumped against trees, brush, rocks and so on.

Because you’ll likely be hunting in extreme weather conditions, you’ll want a pair of binoculars that can withstand such conditions. They should be waterproof, and the lenses should be fog-proof. Another feature to consider are the lens caps. Attached caps will protect the lenses, but not require you to fumble in your pockets looking for lens caps if it starts to rain or snow.

Roof prism binoculars are popular with hunters. Light enters the front (objective) lenses, and is then redirected through the roof prism to the rear (ocular) lenses. The roof prism design allows the binoculars to be more compact than binoculars that transmit the light directly from the objective lenses to the ocular lenses.

Lenses:

When it comes to lenses, bigger is indeed better. The larger the objective lens, the more light the lens transmits to your eyes. If you like to hunt at dawn or dusk, you’ll want the largest objective lenses you can get. The objective lens size is the second number in the manufacturer’s description. For example, 10×42 binoculars have 42 millimeter objective lenses. Objective lenses for hunting binoculars range from 40 millimeters to over 60 millimeters in diameter. Again, bigger is usually better.

When choosing hunting binoculars, look for phase corrected lenses. Phase correction is a coating on the lenses that increases the sharpness, contrast and color saturation. When you’re trying to spot game that blends in with its surroundings, you need every edge you can get.

Another feature to look for is nitrogen-filled optics. The nitrogen inside the binoculars displaces oxygen, so that moisture cannot form inside the optics, fogging the interior lenses.

The rear (ocular) lenses are another thing to consider when shopping for binoculars. If you’re like most people, your eyes aren’t identical when it comes to focus. Therefore, you’ll want to look for models that allow each ocular lens to be adjustable for focus.

Consider, too, the amount of eye relief the binoculars feature. This is the distance from the lens to your eye at which you can still see the view. If you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses while hunting, you’ll need some eye relief. Also, binoculars with good eye relief allow you to bring them up to your eyes quickly, without having to get your eyes perfectly aligned. 15 to 20 millimeters of eye relief is generally considered optimum.

Magnification:

The first number in the manufacturer’s description is the magnification. A pair of 8×42 binoculars magnifies the view by eight times.

For long-distance hunting, such as prairie dog hunting, a high magnification may be desirable. But for most types of wood/field/marsh hunting, too much magnification is undesirable. You’ll be viewing too small a portion of the area you’re scouting.

8x or 10x magnification is generally considered ideal for most hunting applications.

Many manufacturers offer zoom binoculars, which allow you to vary the magnification. In practice, though, zoom binoculars aren’t always ideal for hunting. They tend to be more fragile and weigh more than fixed-magnification models. Also, as mentioned previously, high magnifications restrict your view of an area.

The amount of area binoculars allow you to view is called the “field of view.” The field of view (FOV) is referred to in degrees, or in feet at a specified distance. For example, 6 degrees of field of view is common. Expressed in feet, 6 degrees field of view will allow you to see 314 feet of area at 1,000 yards.

Other Considerations:

Weight is a consideration for any hunting equipment, including binoculars. 32 ounces may not sound like a lot of weight but, after a full day in the field, it will feel like it. Most binoculars made for hunting weigh around 20 ounces.

When making your selection, pay attention to the warranty the manufacturer offers. You’re going to be exposing your binoculars to some pretty rough treatment, so you’ll want the best warranty you can get. Many manufacturers offer warranties that last twenty years or more. Some even offer lifetime warrantees.

Properly cared for, a good pair of binoculars will serve you for decades. When you consider the cost of a single hunting trip, quality $300 to $500 binoculars are a great investment.

How To Choose The Best Birding Binoculars

As any optics worker will tell you they are often asked to recommend the best binocular for different needs and frequently it is the birders (bird watchers) who do the asking! To match the binocular to the birder it helps to first look at the needs of the birding enthusiast.

So what sort of optical demands must we consider? Well for one thing the birder need to see details like the patterns and colour of feathers, often in dim light such as under a tree canopy or in twilight. They need good magnification so that they can easily identify birds at a distance and sometimes they will want to observe birds at very short distances so they want their binoculars to work for close focus observing too, maybe even down to just a few meters.

They need true colour viewing so they can see everything as it really is coloured and not with any tint or false colour. They also need a reasonable field of view so they can observe birds in flight easily and be able to pick birds out from the surrounding trees.

They want the binoculars to be light enough to carry and hang on a neckstrap. Their binoculars should also be light enough to hold up comfortably for viewing and easy enough on the eyes to be able to use for long periods. Birders usually want their binoculars to be compact enough to pack in a rucksack. For observing from hides they often want to use their binoculars on a tripod or monopod so a fitting for these adapters is advisable. If their bird watching is in the wilderness then rugged construction and some element of waterproofing and fogproofing is also advisable.

When looking at binocular specifications we usually pay most attention to the two numbers that define the basic specs. The first number gives us the magnification factor, so an 8x binocular magnifies an image (brings it closer) by 8 times. The higher the magnification the more difficult it becomes to use the binoculars effectively due to the natural hand-shake effect, making it difficult to keep the bird in view and also the smaller the field of view will be. For birding use, an 8x binocular is the most commonly used though in some circumstances enthusiasts will use higher magnification.

The second number in the specs tells us the diameter of the objective lens. This is important for two reasons, firstly the larger the diameter the more light is captured by the binocular so the clearer and brighter the resulting image. Secondly, the larger diameter also gives a larger field of view. In the birding world, the most popular objectives 40mm and 42mm. Getting much higher than this makes the binocular a little too heavy for comfort.

The other important characteristics are the quality of the lenses and prisms and the optical coatings used on those elements. These coatings reduce loss of light through reflection back off the binocular and its internal components and help to preserve good clarity and true colour throughput. As a rule of thumb look for Fully-Multi-Coated (FMC) coatings for bird watching use. The specification for eye relief refers to the distance between the eyepiece and the eye at which the image is viewed. For those who wear glasses, they will need a longer eye relief to allow for the extra distance caused by the glasses being between the binocular and their eye.

Roof and Porro Prism designs refer to the two body styles of binoculars. This difference comes about through the placement of the internal prisms within the binocular body. Roof prism types are the more compact and modern looking. Their objective lenses are more or less in line with the eyepieces, while porro prism types are the traditional style with the lenses stepped out from the line of the eyepieces. More and more birding enthusiasts are now opting for the roof prism type particularly as their quality has caught up with the porro types in recent years.
